Mr. Ewell vs Atticus

I wish I could've seen the incident between Mr. Ewell and Atticus. If I were Atticus i would've beat Mr. Ewell up! He doesn't have the right to spit in my face. So, I just would've beat him up for that. Mr. Ewell was dumb for doing that. He shouldn't have spit in Atticus' face. That's really nasty. Then he called him a nigger lover! I really would've hurt him then.

Atticus says the only reason why Mr. Ewell is angry is because of all this stuff going on with the trial. But that's no reason to spit in someone else's face. Atticus says that Mr. Ewell threatened him and said that he was going to ''get'' him. I think he is really trying to get Atticus. When he says that, I think he means that he is going to try and kill him and I don't want that to happen. Atticus' reaction to Mr. Ewell was priceless. He just stood there and excepted the fact that Mr. Ewell just spit in his face.

The Verdict

The verdict... as we all knew, Tom Robinson was found guilty. But the unusual part about it is that It took the jury almost over 2 hours to reach a verdict. I think the verdict was very predictable just because Tom was black. Which is unfair to him. He cant help the color of his skin is black. Its just not fair! He had a great chance in winning the trial but they had to be unfair and find him guilty.

My reaction when they said he was guilty was, why? Atticus proved a lot of things in the trial. Tom couldn't have done it because he is right handed and is not able to use his left hand. They just found him guilty because he was black. That's all. Maycomb will not change at all. It will just be like another colored man found guilty. The black community might change a lot. They all know that Tom was innocent. Even some of the white people thought he was innocent. Our family wont be the same. Jem thinks its not fair at all. Atticus says that there is nothing he can do but ask for an appeal. The trial was a good one that our family will never forget.

Part of the trial..

When Tom Robinson finally had his chance to get to the witness stand, that's when it got more intense. When Tom got up, his left arm was shorter than his right. I was thinking to myself, how could he have hit Mayella when his left arm is gone? I just sat back and listened. Atticus went first and started asking him questions. Tom seemed like any ole regular person. He went up to the stand and did the oath thing then sat down. When Atticus asked him what happened on November 21, he told them exactly what happened. Tom said that he was passing the Ewell's house that day and Mayella called him over. Then, he said that she had something for him to do inside instead of cutting up chiffarobe like he usually does. Mayella tells him that the front door was messed up and when Tom got up there he said that there wasn't anything wrong with the door and Mayella shut the door. Then he said he tried to get out but she wouldn't let him. Atticus then asked what happened after that. Tom says that Mayella reaches up for him and hugs him around the waist. Then he said he told her he had to get going, then reached up and kissed him. Atticus continues listening. Tom then says then Mr. Ewell came to the window all of a sudden and started yelling and that's when Tom ran. Atticus then began to ask more questions.

Then it was Mr. Gilmer's turn to ask Tom questions. Mr. Gilmer kept asking Tom all these ''why'' questions and Tom was beginning to get a little bothered by it. Then Mr. Gilmer asked if he raped Mayella and Tom said no. Then, Mr. Gilmer kept calling him boy and then right when Mr. Gilmer was about to say something, Jem taps me on the shoulder and says that I need to take Dill somewhere else. Then I see Dill crying; so we go outside under a tree and start talking about the trial.

I think Tom is innocent and did nothing wrong. I also think Mayella is making up a lie just so it will seem like she didn't do anything. Mayella is the one who was trying to do something with Tom, not the other way around. Atticus is really breaking a leg out in the courtroom! He knows what he is doing. He is as smart as a fifth grader. He is going to get Tom through this.

Courtroom

http://www.millercountymuseum.org/presidents/071119_33.jpg
When me, Jem, and Dill went to the courtroom, it was huge. It had two floors. On the second floor that's where all of the tax collector's and all those other people were working at. The colored people also sat up there on the balcony to see the trial. The view up from the balcony was tremendous! There were so many different looking people all around. If you wouldn't have turned on any lights, you would be able to see all of the dust in the room. I even touched one of the walls and I could see all of the dust on my hand. The walls had so many long windows on it. That same wall

with the windows, that's where the jury sat. They all looked like they have been sun burned for 2 hours 'cus all of the bright sun shine. Some people even had food with them. I could just taste the biscuits and milk and coca-cola just by looking at it. The courtroom had so many different smells, that there were too many to describe. I could smell the perfume of the women and i could smell some babies; it was like they had a whole bottle of baby powder on. I saw all the tables down where the people sat at. I saw the table Atticus and Tom Robinson were sitting. There table was spotless while the other people's table was scattered with papers. I could hear a lot of babies crying and kids screaming and yelling.

I think the case against Tom Robinson is going to go well. Atticus know's what he is doing and is doing it for a good cause. I think the judge is going to try his best to make Tom go to jail. But it's not going to work. Tom Robinson isn't going to jail! And, it's really gonna go well because Mr. Heck Tate is the first one to the witness stand.
