When Tom Robinson finally had his chance to get to the witness stand, that's when it got more intense. When Tom got up, his left arm was shorter than his right. I was thinking to myself, how could he have hit Mayella when his left arm is gone? I just sat back and listened. Atticus went first and started asking him questions. Tom seemed like any ole regular person. He went up to the stand and did the oath thing then sat down. When Atticus asked him what happened on November 21, he told them exactly what happened. Tom said that he was passing the Ewell's house that day and Mayella called him over. Then, he said that she had something for him to do inside instead of cutting up chiffarobe like he usually does. Mayella tells him that the front door was messed up and when Tom got up there he said that there wasn't anything wrong with the door and Mayella shut the door. Then he said he tried to get out but she wouldn't let him. Atticus then asked what happened after that. Tom says that Mayella reaches up for him and hugs him around the waist. Then he said he told her he had to get going, then reached up and kissed him. Atticus continues listening. Tom then says then Mr. Ewell came to the window all of a sudden and started yelling and that's when Tom ran. Atticus then began to ask more questions.
Then it was Mr. Gilmer's turn to ask Tom questions. Mr. Gilmer kept asking Tom all these ''why'' questions and Tom was beginning to get a little bothered by it. Then Mr. Gilmer asked if he raped Mayella and Tom said no. Then, Mr. Gilmer kept calling him boy and then right when Mr. Gilmer was about to say something, Jem taps me on the shoulder and says that I need to take Dill somewhere else. Then I see Dill crying; so we go outside under a tree and start talking about the trial.
I think Tom is innocent and did nothing wrong. I also think Mayella is making up a lie just so it will seem like she didn't do anything. Mayella is the one who was trying to do something with Tom, not the other way around. Atticus is really breaking a leg out in the courtroom! He knows what he is doing. He is as smart as a fifth grader. He is going to get Tom through this.
